It’s a question I get asked all the time. How do you run a business from home with your kids ? How do you do it?
And I’ve seen this question asked to others before, as well. To which the typical reply is “Schedule your day. Schedule your meals, your playtime, your nap time, your work time, etc.” Well .. I am here to tell you the exact opposite. Don’t schedule shit, because when you fail to follow that schedule you will feel lost and like you’ve failed.
Let’s face it, scheduling your at-home work time around kids under school age is just not going to work out. Something is always going to happen … or not happen. Like when they don’t want to lay down for a nap, but you had work scheduled during that time, then what are you going to do? Nothing, because you’ve been thrown off of your perfect schedule that was absolutely suppose to make your life easier, and now you’ve failed so you just give up.
So I am here to tell you, absolutely do not schedule anything, except maybe your doctor appointments, your online events, and your daily automated posts. Those things you can schedule. Everything else should be left up in the air. Sounds like chaos right? But actually letting go of the restrictions you are putting on yourself is very freeing. And, since you don’t feel like you have to do certain things within certain time frames, you will be getting a lot more done!
My suggestion is to do exactly what I do and work in pockets of time. Never schedule your, let's call them "work pockets", but when you can grab a few moments to get things done that is when you take a moment to work.
Keep an infinite or ongoing “To Do list” so you know WHAT needs to be done, but WHEN it gets done just so happens to be when you can fit it in between managing the household and caring for the kids. For example : If you wake up before the kids wake up , grab a cup of coffee, check your to do list, and see what you can get done before they wake up. Then, after breakfast while you know they will be getting some screen time while digesting their food, go check a few more things off the list.
Right now I am at the public pool writing this blog on my MacBook Pages app while the kids hang out in the baby pool. You can fit work in all day long if you just grab those work pockets and actually check things off of your to do list rather than catch up on the latest episode of A Handmaid's Tale. Actually you can work while watching A Handmaid's Tale, if that's your thing. That is the beauty of working from home, right?
I once tried holding myself to a tight schedule but I found that when I couldn’t keep my commitment to it I would completely throw in the towel for the day. Now, I am getting more done on the daily, and I’m not stressing myself out over trying to stay on schedule.
